Nursery Room Decorating Do’s and Don’ts

Posted on October 1, 2020

If you are expecting a little one you may be overwhelmed by the amount of decisions you have to make. Preparing the nursery can add a lot of added stress to parents. What color should you paint it, what décor should you add, what’s the theme going to be, what’s the proper bedding? It is important to not let the stress get the best of you and remember that the nursery can be whatever you want it to be. However, there are some things you should take into account along with some things you’ll want to avoid. Keep reading to find out these nursery do’s and don’ts.

Do’s:

  • Choose a theme. Choosing a theme makes decorating significantly easier. If you find one item that you are absolutely in love with, create the color palette and theme off of that.
  • Choose bedding before paint color. There are tons of paint colors and color match technology out there. It’s way easier to match a paint color to bedding than it will be to find bedding that matches the paint color.
  • Pick a softer and soothing paint color. A baby’s nursery should be relaxing and cozy, so you want the color to reflect that.
  • Pick the focal point. Whether you want that to be the crib, a dresser, or other piece, you need to decide so you can design the rest of the room around it.

Don’ts:

  • Forget to paint the ceiling. Babies spend the majority of their time lying on their backs looking up and the ceiling. Don’t leave it blank. Either paint it a shade lighter than the color that’s on the walls to create a cozy feeling or you can even paint a mural on it.
  • Choose a loud paint color. As mentioned above, you want this room to be as relaxing as possible. Bright or bold colors such as yellow or red should be kept to a minimum and definitely shouldn’t be used as the nursery’s primary paint color.
  • Wait until the last minute. This isn’t a process that should be rushed or create anxiety. You want to take your time and feel 100% comfortable with the room before your baby arrives.
